As the Black Moon witches led us, minus the dhampir male, into a long bathing chamber that bubbled enticingly, my emotions warred within me. We were being prepped for something that I was pretty sure I wanted no part of. But damn if a hot soak didnât sound really good to wash off the dirt and sweat and mosquito spray. If I was the lobster going into the pot, I might as well enjoy the soak before the end, right?
I dutifully undressed and filed into the pool with the rest of the supes. The two witches had been left in their cage. I closed my eyes briefly, my mind fleeing back to the last hot pool Iâd been inâwith Konstantin. Screw the vampire blood, I shouldnât have taken no for an answer. Iâd felt too mortified after heâd stopped things between us, totally humiliated that Iâd come on to my boss. But honestly, that hierarchy felt less and less important. If I was going to risk my life for Phoenix Team on a daily basis, I at least deserved to be with the man I wanted. Konstantin Bauer should be my hazard pay. If he wanted me, that was.
I went to work shampooing my hair. The pretty nix was next to me, already rinsing out her long tresses.
âPsst.â I leaned over. âDo you know what theyâre preparing us for?â
She gave me a gentle smile. âYou just got here, right?â
âYeah,â I replied warily.
âI convinced a guard to tell me. One of the men, not these soulless bitches. Once a month, they hold an auction. Itâs tonight. Weâll be sold.â
I blanched. Luiz had said this was a trafficking operationâI knew it was. But I hadnât fully wrapped my head around the fact that I could be sold. And tonight? What if whoever bought me took me out of here before the guys came to rescue me? What if I couldnât reach the team?
âIâm sorry,â the nix said. âIâve had some time to come to terms with it.â
ââOkay,â I murmured. I needed to get word to the team somehow, tell them about this timeline. Bribe a guard maybe? That Cameron guy seemed halfway decentâ¦for a shifter working in an illegal trafficking operation.
My mind spun as I finished bathing and got out of the pool. As we were lined up in a row of chairs like pigs for slaughter. Though I didnât think they bothered doing the hair and makeup of the pigs first.
I examined myself as a silent blonde woman went to work drying my hair. My green slitted eyes, pattern of golden scales at my temples. It had taken a long time, but Iâd come to terms with how I looked. Not human, not naga. Unique. Now, once again, I didnât want to be unique. I wanted to blend in and keep a low profile.
I didnât want to be paraded like an animal. Bought and sold. I looked down, and my eyes caught on the brand on my palm. Where Caeflwich had marked me.
